A CP501 is a reminder. It follows a CP14 and says the balance from that tax year is still sitting on the account.
The amount shown is usually higher than the original bill because penalties and interest have been added since the first notice. The notice restates the year, the current total, and a new date.
It is still early in the collection sequence. Nothing in a CP501 authorizes a levy, and the notice reads mostly as a restatement of the balance with contact and payment information.

It is a reminder that a previously billed balance is still unpaid. It restates the amount, updated for penalties and interest, and gives a new date.
The date is printed on the notice, commonly a few weeks out. Our tool reads it directly from your copy.
The sequence typically continues with a CP503 second reminder, and later a CP504, which describes the IRS's intent to take collection action.
Yes. Replies at this stage usually explain a payment that was already made, dispute the amount, or propose an arrangement. Our tool drafts that reply from your figures.
It is a reminder rather than an enforcement notice, but it signals that the balance is aging and the sequence is moving forward.
The notice is not reported to credit bureaus. It is IRS correspondence about a tax year balance.
The first bill. It states a balance due and starts the collection clock.
